Ashok Chakra for Major Dinesh


Major Dinesh Raghu Raman, who was killed in a gun battle with militants in Jammu and Kashmir last year, has been awarded country's highest peacetime gallantry award Ashok Chakra.


Major Dinesh was chosen for the decoration on the eve of Independence Day, last year. Major Dinesh Raghu Raman, was posted to 34 Rashtriya Rifles Batallion. In October last year, he deployed his company in a village in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir where an encounter with militants was taking place.When he was closing on a suspected hide-out of the militants, he heard an injured fellow officer screaming for help.


Major Raman crawled to reach out to the hospital as he came under heavy fire from the militants. He managed to bring the officer to safety and returned to take on the terrorists, killing two.The battle left him severely wounded and he later succumbed to his injuries.


Major Dinesh hails from Kancheepuram in Tamilnadu and was commissioned in the Jat Regiment in 1999. Major Dinesh's wife Latha is an employee with TCS and is expecting their first child in about two months time. Major Dinesh's father Veteran Subedar Major (Honorary Captain) S.Krishnamurthy said, "despite loosing my son I would still advise my grandchild who is yet to be born, to join the army and serve the nation".
